Gout Treatments - Is Medication the Only Solution?

Gout pain in foot
Looking desperately for gout treatments for your gout attacks? Are you a gout sufferer living in pain with frequent gout attacks? My husband was in your position up until 2 years ago. Today, he has freedom from gout.....not a single gout attack for the last 2 years. I will share with you his story and how he did it. You see, for many years my husband suffered from gout in silence. He had recurring gout attacks every 2 to 3 months or so. Each attack happened at night just before bed time or during his sleep. He would complain of severe pain and his sleep would be ruined....can you imagine trying to sleep with all that pain, it was just not possible. Although gout could attack any of the joints, my husband always had the first gout symptom on his big toe. My husband's big toe would swell so badly with throbbing pain that the entire area would turn red and hot. He could hardly walk and had to call in sick to work until the pain subsided. I had to drive him to see the doctor and nurse him the whole time. Needless to say, he felt helpless, frustrated and angry.

Not knowing any better, my husband depended heavily on medication at the time to take the pain away. He consumed no less than 6 tablets a day and the doctor advised that gout medication had to be taken for at least 1 month to be effective. Unfortunately, after consuming 180 tablets that entire month, the gout attacks never stopped. It was a vicious cycle and a constant nightmare. During one of his gout attacks, the pain was so overwhelming that his face turned pale. The doctor had to give him an injection for immediate relief. I was worried that taking so much of medication would have long term repercussions on his health. Some serious side effects included acute gout attacks, rash, fever, chills, abdominal pain, headache, vomitting, unusual bleeding and kidney failure.
Apart from gout, my husband had no other health problems. I wanted to keep it that way but better still, I wanted to completely free him from gout, without the need to take medication.

Gout Treatments - What is Gout?

In order to identify gout treatments, one should understand what gout is and how it comes about. Gout is a type of arthritis that is caused by the build-up of uric acid in the blood stream. What is uric acid? Uric acid is a chemical that is created in the body when it breaks down substances called purines in foods. Purines are commonly found in high protein foods. When the kidneys are unable to flush out the excess uric acid, they form crystals and deposit in the joints. This will cause the pain and swelling in the affected joints.

Causes of Gout for Effective Gout Treatments

Bad food for gout
Gout treatments will be more effective if we know what causes gout. A gout attack can happen due to one or more of the following:-

~ Foods high in purines such as seafood, red meat like lamb, beef and pork, parts of animals and alcohol
~ Being overweight is another factor that could cause a gout attack
~ Even if a person was not overweight, a lack of exercise could also be a contributing factor
~ Consumption of certain drugs such as aspirin and insulin are known to increase the levels of uric acid in the blood stream. This could lead to a gout attack.
~ A person who has high blood pressure is also at risk of suffering from gout.

Food to Avoid in Gout Treatments

Alcohol bad for gout
My husband was always busy at work and never made time to eat right or exercise, not knowing that these were two of the most important gout treatments. He finally made a decision one day to change his diet and lifestyle after reading this wonderful book, "Cure Gout Now" by Lisa McDowell. This book made him regain control of his life and he is now happy and positive again.

Since foods high in purines or protein-rich foods are the main cause of gout, it makes sense to cut back on them. Seafood especially shellfish (lobster, oysters, prawns, mussels, scallops, crabs), anchovies, sardines and mackerel should be avoided. Animal organs such as kidneys, liver and brain contain high level of purines. Alcohol particularly beer is also high in purines. When alcohol is changed into lactic acid in the body, it acts to decrease the quantity of uric acid that the kidneys can flush out. This is because the uric acid competes with lactic acid in order to be removed by the kidneys.

Gout Treatments By Changing Diet and Lifestyle

Dietary and lifestyle modifications are highly recommended gout treatments. As you avoid foods high in purines, some healthy gout foods that you can consume are cereals, oatmeal, dairy products, pasta, green leafy vegetables, potatoes and most types of fruits. Black cherry juice and berries are good gout foods. You can also take supplements like celery seed capsules. Celery is noted for its anti-gout properties.

Drinking plenty of water is essential in a healthy gout diet as it helps to flush out the uric acid. You should drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water each day. Water intake also include drinking fruit juices. Try to drink coffee and tea in moderation as they contain caffeine which dehydrates the body.

While you improve your diet, you should also change your lifestyle from a sedentary to an active one. Your schedule should incorporate regular exercise at least 3 times a week for 30 minutes each session. Exercise promotes optimum functioning of the organs in the body and eliminates toxins. You will find yourself refreshed, rejuvenated and mentally alert.

My husband changed his diet and lifestyle by following methods introduced by Lisa McDowell in "Cure Gout Now". He has not had a gout attack for 2 years now and I am confident he will never have another one - ever. The complete step-by-step guide in her book is easy to understand and follow. I highly recommend it to all gout sufferers looking for a solution. My husband is living testimony that gout treatments without medication is very much a reality.
